ADX can identify whether directional movement is strengthening, but it does not state whether price should be bought or sold. This strategy combines rising ADX with the relationship between +DI and -DI, then requires an aligned price structure and a completed pullback before entry.

How the strategy works

The Average Directional Index is derived from directional movement. A rising ADX indicates that directional strength is increasing, regardless of whether price is moving up or down. +DI above -DI supports bullish direction; -DI above +DI supports bearish direction.

The method does not buy every cross or treat 25 as a mechanical switch. It first identifies higher highs and higher lows, waits for ADX to rise from a quiet regime and uses a controlled correction plus a confirmation candle to avoid chasing an extended impulse.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE. Price structure defines the trend; ADX measures strength while +DI and -DI help confirm direction. The chart is illustrative. No win rate, monthly return or guaranteed outcome is claimed. Results depend on market conditions, costs, execution and rule discipline.

Indicators, markets and timeframe

ToolsIndicators

ADX (14) with +DI and -DI, swing structure and an optional 20-period EMA for visual trend context.

ContextMarkets

Liquid major Forex pairs during active sessions. Avoid symbols whose spread is large relative to the planned Stop Loss.

ChartTimeframes

M30 and H1 provide frequent but readable structure; H4 produces fewer, slower signals. Validate the threshold for each pair.

Entry rules

BUY checklist

  1. Price forms higher highs and higher lows, and any optional trend average slopes upward.
  2. +DI is above -DI while ADX rises through or holds above the tested strength zone near 20–25.
  3. A pullback holds above the latest structural swing and a bullish confirmation candle closes before BUY.

SELL checklist

  1. Price forms lower highs and lower lows with a clearly bearish structure.
  2. -DI is above +DI while ADX rises from a weak regime or remains strong.
  3. A recovery fails below the latest swing high and a bearish confirmation candle closes before SELL.

Stop Loss and Take Profit

Stop Loss

For BUY, place the Stop Loss below the pullback swing that invalidates the higher-low structure; for SELL, place it above the recovery swing. Do not place the stop at an arbitrary ADX value because ADX is not a price level.

Take Profit

Target the next structural objective or a predefined 1.5R–2R distance. A trailing exit behind new swings may suit persistent trends, but it must be tested separately from a fixed target.

Read direction and strength separately

No single ADX reading is enough. Combine price direction, DI relationship and changing strength in the correct order.

LayerBullish evidenceWhy it matters
StructureHigher high followed by a protected higher lowDefines the price level that invalidates the idea
Direction+DI remains above -DIConfirms which side currently dominates directional movement
StrengthADX rises instead of rolling overShows that the directional move is gaining rather than fading

Risk management

Set the monetary risk before calculating position size. Keep correlated exposure under control, define maximum daily and total drawdown, and never widen the Stop Loss after entry simply to avoid realizing a loss.

Example trade walkthrough

In the illustrative EURUSD H1 example, price breaks to a higher high while +DI remains above -DI. ADX rises through 25, then price makes a shallow pullback without breaking the previous higher low. A bullish confirmation candle triggers BUY, the stop sits below the pullback swing and the target is placed near 2R.

When to avoid this setup

Avoid entries when ADX is falling, +DI and -DI repeatedly cross inside congestion, price has no clear swing structure, or the signal appears after an oversized impulse candle. ADX can remain high while a mature trend is close to exhaustion.

How to test it responsibly

  1. Write every entry, exit and invalidation rule before reviewing results.
  2. Mark all valid historical setups without deleting inconvenient losses.
  3. Include spread, commission, swap and plausible slippage.
  4. Keep a separate out-of-sample period that was not used to refine the rules.
  5. Forward-test on Demo before considering Live execution at controlled risk.
