Multi-Timeframe Forex Confirmation Strategy: H4 Range and M15 Re-entry

Test a two-timeframe Forex range strategy: completed H4 context, an M15 inner-band visit and immediate reclaim. Exact entries, exits, expiry and cost checks.

17 min readReviewed by ForexBestRobots Editorial Team
This authored EURUSD strategy assigns different jobs to H4 and M15. Completed H4 data define a fixed range with low directional efficiency; M15 must visit an inner edge band and reclaim its threshold on the immediately next close. Price must remain within the box's outer boundaries before entry. One box supplies one candidate, and the target is its midpoint. All observations are invented; no profitable edge is claimed.
H4 permits a range hypothesis; M15 must confirm before the box expires.

A slow chart can look sideways while a fast chart starts a real breakout. This strategy tests whether a precisely defined H4 range context helps an M15 move back from an inner edge toward the midpoint. The faster close must confirm immediately, and a boundary break before entry cancels the box. More timeframes can still describe the same price information; agreement is not proof of independence.

This is an authored research baseline, not a proven profitable system. The existing H4/H1/M15 strategy follows a trend and pullback. The D1/H1/M15 reversal needs a failed break outside a daily level. Here only two timeframes are used, with an inside-band visit and reclaim; an outside break before entry is disqualifying.

1. Fix the two clocks and one candidate per box

Use EURUSD Bid candles, pip 0.0001 and illustrative tick 0.00001; verify actual contract specifications. Use broker H4 openings and aligned consecutive M15 intervals, not local clock labels. At the first own-symbol quote establishing a new H4 bar at D, freeze the completed reference. Required H4/M15 history, quote order and clock mapping must be reliable; missing intervals disable the box. No H1, session or news filter is included.

Remain flat and require no EURUSD position or pending EURUSD order anywhere in the account at A and submission. A is the first completed M15 close inside either inner band in the current box; a failed first candidate still consumes that box across both directions. Require the complete sequence of current-interval M15 candles from D, so an earlier visit cannot be hidden. A and B must both close strictly before the next broker H4 opening. Never carry a candidate into the next box or reuse an expired candle there.

2. Freeze the H4 box and directional efficiency

Use the last 8 completed consecutive H4 candles ending at D. Define L = min(Low), U = max(High) and W = U − L. Require W from 60 to 160 pips inclusive and the last completed close inside [L + 0.25 × W, U − 0.25 × W], including endpoints. Freeze midpoint Mid = (L + U) / 2. Later current-H4 highs, lows and closes cannot redraw this box.

For chronological H4 closes C0 through C8, C0 is the close immediately before those reference candles. Define ER8 = abs(C8 − C0) / sum(abs(Ci − C(i−1)), i=1..8). Require a positive denominator and ER8 ≤ 0.25; compare full precision. The 9 closes must be available by D with consecutive H4 timestamps. This measures net direction relative to traveled close distance, not a probability that the range will hold. It is not an extra independent price source.

3. Select the first inner-band visit A

The BUY inner band is [L + 0.05 × W, L + 0.15 × W]; SELL uses [U − 0.15 × W, U − 0.05 × W]. Endpoints count. A is the first M15 close in either band, not merely a wick touch. Require A's full Bid range inside [L, U] and High(A) − Low(A) ≤ 0.50 × W. A needs no prescribed body direction. Reject a failed A rather than selecting another visit.

For BUY freeze Bid stop S = L − 0.05 × W and Bid target Tp = Mid, rounded down to valid ticks. The stop lies outside the box, while the target is its fixed midpoint. Before entry the outside-boundary veto still applies; after a fill the declared protection and time exits govern. A itself may have touched the midpoint before closing in the band; that is not a post-A target touch. Never move S or Tp to rescue a quote.

4. Require the immediately next M15 reclaim B

B is exactly the next consecutive completed M15 candle after A. For BUY require a bullish B with Close(B) > L + 0.15 × W, Close(B) ≤ L + 0.20 × W, Low(B) ≥ L and High(B) < Tp. Equality at the reclaim threshold fails; equality at the price cap is allowed. A wick, extra waiting candle or oversized reclaim cannot substitute for B.

Before entry, any observed current-interval Bid below L or above U invalidates the whole box; equality at an outside boundary is allowed. After A, Bid reaching the projected midpoint target also vetoes before confirmation. On B, apply these vetoes before its close tests. Missing M15 data, invalid geometry or the next H4 opening cancels permanently. Confirm from completed B, then use a later quote; never fill retrospectively at B's close.

The invented H4 box is fixed from 08:00 with L 1.10000, U 1.11000 and midpoint 1.10500. Its width is 100 pips and ER8 is 0. M15 A closes at 08:15 inside [1.10050, 1.10150]; the immediately next B closes at 08:30 at 1.10160, strictly above 1.10150 and no higher than 1.10200. Neither candle breaks the outer boundary. The drawing ends at B and does not show a later trade result.

5. Specify SELL and the Ask exit allowance

A SELL candidate is the first close in the upper inner band under the same range and box rules. Freeze Bid ceiling V = U + 0.05 × W and projected Bid target P = Mid. The immediately next B must be bearish with Close(B) < U − 0.15 × W, Close(B) ≥ U − 0.20 × W, High(B) ≤ U and Low(B) > P. An outer-boundary breach or post-A Bid at/below P vetoes first.

SELL enters at Bid and exits on Ask. Set Ask SL = V + 0.00020 and Ask TP = P + 0.00020, rounded up to valid ticks. The 2-pip conversion is an authored allowance, not observed Ask history or a spread forecast. Test actual relevant Bid/Ask quotes. One first inner-band candidate covers both directions together; no automatic reversal follows a failed box.

6. Inspect the first quote and one protected attempt

Inspect and submit on the first own-symbol quote received after B closes, no later than 15 seconds after that close, with receipt age at most 2 seconds at submission on verified clocks. Require tradable Bid below Ask, spread at most 2 pips and abs(Bid − Close(B)) ≤ 0.00020. Any observed post-B touch of the frozen Bid invalidation or projected target before submission cancels. Missing or inconsistent evidence blocks entry; do not wait for a better quote. The box must still be valid and the quote must arrive before the next H4 opening.

Check fixed price ordering, tick size, broker distances, permissions, margin and combined exposure. Establish valid SL/TP with the initial order or do not open. One submission consumes A, including rejection or an uncertain response; reconcile broker state before any further action. After a confirmed fill, recompute costs and the loss estimate with that actual entry. A failed limit or absent protection requests closure, records costs and blocks another attempt for A.

7. Reproduce the invented H4-to-M15 BUY

At 08:00, the completed H4 reference gives L 1.10000, U 1.11000, W 100 pips and Mid 1.10500. The 9 chronological closes start and end at 1.10500; their absolute changes total 0.01500, or 150 pips, so ER8 is 0. The last close is in the middle half. The BUY band is [1.10050, 1.10150] and reclaim cap 1.10200. The table gives the first M15 candles by broker closing time; the optional recipe reconstructs the reference.

Candle · close timeBid openBid highBid lowBid close
A · 08:151.105001.105101.100801.10130
B · 08:301.101301.101801.101101.10160

A's 43-pip range is at most half the box and its close 1.10130 is inside the band. B is bullish and closes at 1.10160 beyond the threshold, within the cap and before expiry. Assume all other checks pass and the first quote at 08:30:01 is Bid 1.10160 / Ask 1.10170, with BUY filled at Ask. Fixed S is 1.09950 and Tp 1.10500: price risk 22 pips, potential reward 33 pips. No later outcome is supplied.

8. Include costs before sizing the position

Limit planned entry loss to 0.5% of current equity and total planned open/pending account loss to 1.0%. In USD, use Budget = min(0.005 × equity, max(0, 0.01 × equity − existingPlannedLoss)). Unknown existing risk blocks entry. Invented equity $10,000 with no existing risk gives budget $50. Assume pip value $10 per lot, round-turn commission $7 per lot, adverse exit allowance 1 pip and financing reserve $0. With positive executable distances dSL and dTP in pips, define Loss1 = (dSL + 1) × 10 + 7 and Reward1 = (dTP − 1) × 10 − 7. Require positive estimates and unrounded Reward1 / Loss1 ≥ 1.25. These are planning inputs, not recommended risk or a guaranteed loss cap. Verify actual fees and conversion; see trading costs.

Here Loss1 is $237 and Reward1 is $313, a ratio about 1.32. With minimum and step 0.01 lot, round down to 0.21 lots: estimated loss $49.77 and reward $65.73. The next step, 0.22, estimates $52.14 loss and exceeds budget. If the first quote were Bid 1.10180 / Ask 1.10190, spread and displacement still pass, but Loss1 is $257 and Reward1 $293: ratio about 1.14 fails. Skip it, and skip whenever the minimum lot exceeds the budget. Spread is already inside executable distances; never add it twice. After an actual fill, its price difference is inside the recomputed distances; the 1-pip reserve is for the remaining exit. Follow the account-risk rules.

Assumed BUY fill at Ask 1.10170, fixed Bid stop 1.09950 and Bid target 1.10500. Price risk is 22 pips and potential reward 33 pips. With the stated exit allowance and fees, loss is estimated at $237 per lot and reward at $313. A $50 budget permits 0.21 lots: estimated loss $49.77 and potential reward $65.73. The target is a possibility, not a realized result.

Optional: reconstruct H4 context and the cost arithmetic

Use chronological closes C0 = 1.10500; [C1..C8] = [1.10600,1.10400,1.10650,1.10350,1.10600,1.10400,1.10550,1.10500]. For reference bars i from 1 through 8, set Open(i)=C(i−1); Close(i)=C(i). Use High(1)=1.11000; Low(2)=1.10000; otherwise set each high to the larger open/close plus 0.00050 and each low to the smaller minus 0.00050. Assign consecutive H4 intervals ending at D. These are synthetic OHLC, not historical execution; English decimal notation is retained.

BUY arithmetic: (1.10170 − 1.09950) / 0.0001 = 22; (1.10500 − 1.10170) / 0.0001 = 33; (22 + 1) × 10 + 7 = 237; (33 − 1) × 10 − 7 = 313; floor((50 / 237) / 0.01) × 0.01 = 0.21; 0.21 × 237 = 49.77; 0.21 × 313 = 65.73. These are alternative estimated outcomes, not realized results.

9. Exit before the context expires

Keep initial SL/TP, with no trailing, break-even move, partial exit, averaging, automatic reversal or extra candle-close exit. Earlier actual protective fills take priority. Otherwise request full closure at the earlier of 2 elapsed hours after B's closing timestamp and the next broker H4 opening, using the first tradable quote: Bid for BUY, Ask for SELL. With D at 08:00, B at 08:30 and next H4 opening at 12:00, the example deadline is 10:30.

A new H4 interval ends the old context even during a quote outage; delayed execution does not extend its deadline. Do not evaluate the old candidate with the new box's levels. If required data or clock mapping becomes unreliable, retain accepted protection and request closure when possible. Reconcile uncertain orders or closes before another action. Requests are not fills; gaps and costs may exceed planned loss. A fresh box needs a new completed reference and its own first visit.

10. Test availability at the actual decision time

Replay H4 openings, reference availability, every eligible M15 close, first quotes, responses and exits chronologically. MT4 shift 0 is forming. A historical time-to-bar lookup can return the bar containing a time, not the last bar already completed then; verify actual opening and closing availability and reject nearest-bar substitutions across gaps. Never use the final high or low of the H4 bar containing A or B as pre-entry context. See responsible backtesting.

Compare a separately logged version without the efficiency filter, using the same dates, costs, entry geometry and risk. Record every range-width, band and cap variant; reserve later chronological evaluation and forward demo. Low efficiency can precede a breakout, and fast reclaims can fail before costs are recovered. No backtest, win rate or expectancy is supplied. Strategy 1 and Strategy 2 test different confirmation sequences, not interchangeable votes for this entry.

Freeze only completed H4 evidence, then select the first M15 inner-band close across both sides. The immediately next close must reclaim within its cap, while outer boundaries and the midpoint veto remain intact. Only then inspect the first quote, protection and costs. Expiry or failure consumes the box; a later attractive candle cannot revive it.

  1. All required H4/M15 observations were complete and available at D and each decision.
  2. The 8-bar box, middle close, positive denominator and efficiency limit pass.
  3. A is the first inner-band close across both directions and its range passes.
  4. The immediately next B reclaims within the cap; vetoes and expiry take priority.
  5. The first quote, protection, cost ratio, volume and aggregate account risk pass.
  6. Rejected boxes, uncertain orders and protective/time/context exits are retained.

11. Questions about timeframe confirmation

Does low H4 efficiency prove the next M15 move will revert?

No. It summarizes completed close changes. A directional move can begin immediately afterward. Test its incremental effect against a comparable version without the filter, including every rejected box and all costs.

Can another M15 candle rescue a failed reclaim?

No. B must immediately follow A and confirm before the box expires. The first candidate consumes the box even if rejected. A new H4 box needs a fresh reference and a fresh first visit.

Why can the candle pattern pass while the order is rejected?

The observed pattern and executable trade are separate. A worse first quote, higher costs, invalid protection or excessive account risk can reject an otherwise valid signal.

Does the target mean the example earned a profit?

No. It is a fixed potential exit. The chart ends at confirmation; no later execution or result is supplied. Losses, missed fills and time exits remain possible.
